The Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program measures student achievement in grades 3-8. ELA is measured using multiple choice questions at all grade levels, and a separate open-response writing component is administered in grades 3, 5 and 8. Fifth-grade students are asked to write a narrative essay (a story), eighth-grade students an expository essay (an explanation), and eleventh-grade students a persuasive essay (an argument).
