The Gateway assessments are end-of-course tests designed by the Tennessee State Board of Education. Tennessee students must successfully pass exams in English, math and science in order to earn a high school diploma. Gateway assessments for English I and II serve as the high school exit examinations for English.
Pros: Aligned to the standards I teach • Assesses a range of students, including those from far below to far above grade level • Takes students a reasonable amount of time to complete
Cons: Misses growth of some students, such as those far below and/or far above grade level
Pros: Easy to administer • Results returned quickly • Data is presented clearly
Cons: Doesn't help me track my students' learning gains over time
I believe all standardized test should be untimed. Scholars will be able to more accurately show their knowledge and understanding of concepts/skills if given a testing session free from timed pressure. In addition, I believe that scholars should receive standardized formative question s that teachers can pull for weekly formative data/assessments. Additional software for scholars to use for remediation and training needs to be provided to ALL schools. Thank you for your consideration.

This test measures basic proficiency in algebra using multiple-choice questions. The results come in timely (usually 4-6 weeks after testing) and provide information on individual student, class and school performance. Student performance is not broken down by individual objective, but is broken down into five smaller "Reporting Categories" that indicate proficiency in related clusters of objectives, like "numbers and operations" and "mathematical processes." While it is aligned to state standards, I do not consider it to be a rigorous test.
