The GRADE™ (Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation) is a diagnostic reading test that determines what developmental skills students Pre-K through 12th grade have mastered and where they need instruction or intervention. It is a group-administered, norm-referenced assessment, and provides both group and individual results.
Pros: Aligned to the standards I teach • Assesses a range of students, including those from far below to far above grade level • Takes students a reasonable amount of time to complete
Cons: Does not assess higher-order thinking
Pros: Easy to administer • Results returned quickly • Data is presented clearly
Cons: Doesn't help me track my students' learning gains over time • It is hard to use the data • Is not helpful to my professional growth as a teacher
GRADE is a pre and post test; waiting until the end of the year is too late to measure the amount of growth a student has made. I also question the stanine in some subtests; missing one question when there are only three of that kind is not a fair measurement of that skill and a low stanine in that area is misleading to teachers and to parents.

The GRADE is used for diagnostic purposes as an indicator that a student may need additional reading testing if scores are below grade level. This test can track student or class progress over time using the growth scale value (GSV). This test is untimed and provides information pertaining to reading comprehension, vocabulary, and listening comprehension-valuable when making classroom decisions and student groupings.

The GRADE is a wonderful test that once again gives a score that will help you track from the very low to the very high. It allows you to build your curriculum around the needs of all of your students. I do feel that a paper and pencil version would benefit the special education students much more.
